Hi guys. I've heard that DMF have some kind of negative aura around it: chemists are trying to avoid it in their synthesis. Why is it so? In my opinion it's properties are quite unique
Hey! Based on personal experience, I can say that DMF is quite difficult to evaporate and it is difficult to separate from the products during extraction.
Also it is quite toxic and cannot be used in medicinal synthesis
@elizaveta-msu if you need to work with DMF you can add toluene to it, they form an azeotropic mixture, then there will be no such difficulties with evaporation
DMF doesn't like to pull into CCl4 (not CHCl3 or CH2Cl2) so you can use it for extractions. The bp is relatively high, but vacuum distillation does its job and I think about 55°C on water-jacked pump is acceptable for most purposes
@chemdimon I knew only about toluene, not about CCl4, thanks for the information!
