Do I understand correctly that the mechanism of excisional repair of DNA damage is a mutation?
This is one of the mechanisms of DNA repair. Along with base excisional repair and mismatched nucleotide repair, it allows one to correct single-stranded DNA damage using an intact complementary strand as a template. In contrast to the above mechanisms, NER is designed for larger DNA damage, such as pyrimidine dimers formed in DNA by ultraviolet radiation.
